JOONSUNG BAE

The artist

Joonsung explores the essence of perspective while searching for the relevance of art and perspective through traditional media such as painting and photograph. He keeps on questioning on the perspectives from his early works based on the costumes in Western paintings to his recent works of lenticular printing. The significance of his work lies in the consistent examination and broad reinterpretation of the tradition of visual art.

Joonsung Bae borrows images from masterpieces in the history of the Eastern and Western art, and incorporates them into his own inventiveness. The images he borrowed are figure paintings or still lives by such masters as David, Ingres, Corot, Courbet, Van Dyck and Velazquez. He compounds photography and painting reproduction in an effort to interpret anew the major concepts of the Western art history. Bae's in his earlier works reproduced costume painting on clear acrylic film covers parts of naked figure photograph.

The film on which costumes were painted do not completely adhere to the surface of photographs (or canvases), creating a layer which allows for a sense of space and distance. In his work process, he is exploring the "construction of painting," and suggesting that the painting can be a process of forming layers of compound images. His later works introduce the lenticular image; it was adopted to integrate the double layer structure of photographs and acryl film. It enables the audience to see the figure both nude and in costume from different perspectives. It also allows more digital factors in his works than in his previous acryl film works. Bae's work is about veiling and reveiling, about tradition and the present, about painting and photography.

Joonsung Bae was born in Kwangju, Korea (1967) and educated in National University of Seoul. He has exhibited in France, Madrid, Moscow, Art Basel, Brussels, Seoul, etc.
