Lu LuoThe artistThe present works embody her memories of the cultural traditions of her native region coupled to European cultural axioms. Accordingly, tradition Chinese materials and patterns are reproduced in figures with associative characteristics and expressive urges that are more West-oriented. After completing her education in her birthplace Si Chuan, Lu Luo settled in Groningen in 1992 and 1995, respectively, to continue her education at Academie Minerva (Academy of Art) in Groningen. She held herr first Dutch exhibition at Galerie Waalkens in Finsterwolde (Province of Groningen) in 1999, subsequently moving on to further successful exhibitions both at home and abroad. The radical social, economic and cultural changes in her homeland stimulated her to set up a second studio in Beijing in 2007, besides the one she currently occupy in The Hague. In this Beijing studio, Eastern and Western elements blend together to a more profound degree than in the work created in the West, thus forming completely new, poetic figures. . Recently Lu Luo started working on her slowly expanding series of works inspired by the costumes of traditional Chinese opera. In her latest series she uses different kinds of material, like old Chinese fabrics, rice paper, traditional Chinese prints, ink, bee-wax, gel and acrylic paint. All these materials, mostly from China, are used in works of a meter and higher, where the form of traditional opera costumes can easily be discovered. With this recent serie, Lu Luo wants to keep the traditional opera of the Chinese people and their beautifully handmade costumes alive. |
